Industrial Coatings ApplicatorTraining  Scheme (ICATS) ICATS is a comprehensive structured training scheme for the registration, training and certification of the industrial surface preparation of coating operatives.

ICATS provides evidence of practical training and competency in industrial surface preparation and coating application and complements other industrial skills sector schemes.  The scheme has a mandatory basic unit ‘Industrial Coatings Applicator’ that comprises six modules; Health and Safety, site Access, Plant and Equipment, Surface Preparation, Paint Types, and Application and Quality Control.  Two individual specialist modules are also now available: Spray Painting Operative and Abrasive Blast Cleaning Operative; these can be undertaken by applicators once they have successfully completed the basic ICATS module.

ICATS is the first scheme to offer in-depth skills training to the equivalent of NVQ level 2 within the Protective Coatings Industry.  The main benefit to clients and structure owners is that when specifying that a project be carried out by an ICATS registered company they can be sure that today’s sophisticated coating systems will be applied by a trained workforce, with the key skills to ensure that the maximum performance from the systems obtained.  This will elongate times to first maintenance and reduce costly shutdowns.

Registered contracting companies will benefit, as they will have proven documentation of a trained and certificated workforce.  A qualified workforce will add client confidence and should minimise technical, safety and quality control issues on site.

ICATS is mandated for Highways Works through National Highways Sector Scheme (NHSS) 19A:  ‘Corrosion Protection of Ferrous Substrates by Industrial Coatings’ from February 1st 2008 and by Network Rail in their documentation by June 2008.  Only contractors with an ICATS-trained workforce will qualify to undertake projects after these dates.

ICATS has over 60 client members with more than 800 applicators currently undergoing, or having completed, training.  Details of member companies can be found on the Correx website: www.correx.org
